GOD IS COMPETENTLY COMMITTED

278/365

Two words came out of the first day of a leadership workshop I am attending: skill and will. The two words fall under competence and commitment respectively. The proposed dialogue between the two friends in today’s Gospel makes for an interesting read.

The friend responding to the request speaks thus:
Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee” (vs 7)

I found this response rather intriguing. When we break it apart, he was literally saying ‘it isn’t that I do not have what you’re asking for, I do. However, I cannot get up to give it to you’. In other words, although I am competent and have the ability to do what you ask, I am not willing to do it’

Regarding men therefore, it isn’t just about ability, but also commitment to doing. That combination is necessary hence the reason why the hearts of men, if one has it, is a treasure worth protecting because it gives the seal of their commitment.

When Jesus encountered the leper in the Gospel of Mark, he exhibited his willingness to heal and God’s exceeding ability ‘to do’ is littered throughout the pages of scripture. So we can be rest assured that our God is competently committed where his children are concerned.
